Over the past three years Sailing Logic has built high performance sports teams from novice racing sailors. Against all the odds the teams have regularly beaten many of the best and most experienced teams in Northern Europe.
Winning the Rolex Fastnet Race in class is a result that most hardened racing teams aspire to. Our team of novice racing sailors achieved this within four months of being put on a boat together for the very first time. This was not just luck as our teams have since gone on to win many offshore races and also came 2nd in the trials for the British team in 2006.
Exceptional leadership and inspirational team building have been the key factors in the success of our racing teams. Lack of experience and talent has been compensated for by exceptional motivation, complete harmony within the team and an unequivocal trust.
There are many synergies between leadership skills and teamwork in business and high performance sports teams. It would be naïve to believe that a leader of a sports team with little business experience could translate the skills directly into the corporate world. That is why we work with two specialist team development consultancies with vast experience in the commercial sector.
Combining structured workshops with practical sailing session, the valuable techniques used in high performance sports teams can be directly correlated to the business environment. High Performance Development is a training organisation that develops bespoke programmes through discussion with each client to ensure they receive targeted training to meet their requirements.

Symphony Solutions
‘Encouraging behavioural change in high performance teams’
Symphony is a leadership and team development consultancy that combines leading business school theory, with current sports psychology - to develop high performance behaviour in teams.
The consultancy was born out of the lessons of the 2004 / 05 Global Challenge Yacht Race. This race was a truly unique event; 12 yachts, with 17 amateurs and one professional skipper competed to be the first to sail around the world against the prevailing winds and currents in a grueling contest of strength and endurance. This nine month experience was a fascinating test of leadership and teamwork. Two separate business management texts have been written on the lessons of this race.
David Melville, lead the team of BP Explorer to third place in the 2004/05 Global Challenge. On completion David combined his experience of leading teams in business and extreme ocean racing events within Symphony Solutions, the leadership and team development consultancy.
