The countdown has begun for the Warsash Spring Series with just three days to go before our first teams of the new decade join us in Shamrock Quay.

There is much work still to do to both Jaguar and Puma before the weekend but everything is on schedule! Both boats are looking awesome and we are sure that the competition will be fierce between the two yachts.

Both Philippe and Tim will be keen to repeat their successes of the 2009 Hamble Winter Series. We suspect that Tim will be hungry to reverse the result to push Puma into 2nd place, he is defending his victory of the 2009 Warsash Spring Series aboard Addiction after all!

Fastnet 2009 Team Re-Union

Puma Logic's Fastnet 2009 team had a re-union in Southampton on Saturday night. Sharon’s passion for sailing combines perfectly with her commercial skills and experience, motivation and drive to strategically push Sailing Logic forward in a positive manner.

Sharon, 33, brings with her eight years of diverse experience gained in the sales and marketing of products and services ranging from No7 cosmetics to financial services as well as a Marketing Manager for Carling beer. More recently she has been working with Neilson Active Holidays as a Flotilla skipper with a focus on customer service. She joins the Sailing Logic team to manage the company’s sales strategy and its implementation. This remit includes identifying new corporate charter business, a tough call in a tough economic climate, and she will also be developing the RYA Sailing School side of the business.

Sharon is relishing the challenge ahead, commenting, ‘The team’s experience, energy and enthusiasm combined with their amazing results and friendly approach makes them a company I am proud to promote. Both individual and business customers will know that they are in very safe hands. I’m really looking forward to helping them take the business to the next level.’

Sharon has joined Sailing Logic in January as the company moves into new waterfront offices at Shamrock Quay, Southampton.

An informative new website & Club Logic

In support of their sales and marketing drive, Sailing Logic has also just launched a lively new website that combines detailed information about its range of products with all the latest news about the wide-ranging activities on offer, both on and off the water. This includes corporate sailing, RYA courses, inshore and offshore yacht racing and yacht charter as well as introducing a new initiative called Club Logic.

Club Logic key benefits include regular opportunities for discounted and even free sailing, as well as great deals from the leading marine clothing company, Musto, plus regular monthly social evenings at the Royal Ocean Racing Club in central London. All that is required to join is to go sailing for at least a weekend and then crew automatically become part of the club. Club members are kept updated with the latest news, upcoming events and special offers.

The company’s packed 2010 Racing Calendar kicks off 13/14 March with the first round of the Warsash Spring Series and the season ends with the Hamble Winter Series, when they will try to repeat their 2009 performance, winning 1st and 2nd places in IRC1. Philippe Falle, Director, is looking forward to another successful year commenting, ‘We are very excited about 2010. Moving forward from where we left off in 2009 is going to a huge ask, but we are up for it! We are really looking forward to getting back out on the water again in March at the Warsash Spring Series and then heading further afield for the Offshore campaigns. All this as well as taking the company into the next phase of growth and development means very exciting times for Sailing Logic and we are looking forward enormously to this great challenge.’

Annual Re-fit Starts in Arctic Conditions!

Work has started on the annual re-fit of Puma and Jaguar Logic. Jaguar Logic finished just two points behind in a brilliant 2nd place! It is the icing on the cake for what has been an outstanding season for Sailing Logic.

The conditions were extremely tough for the final race of the season, the toughest we can remember with squalls relentlessly battering the fleet. Gusts of 45 knots of wind were a regular occurrence as yachts dropped like flies.

Once Premier Flair and Great Scot retired with substantial sail damage early on in the race all Jaguar had to do was finish the race to consolidate an excellent 2nd place in the series. However, skipper Tim Thubron, obviously had a series win in his sights and his team were desperate to beat Puma Logic by the four places needed to clinch victory.

Puma Logic was battle weary and limping around the course with no main sail! The atmosphere was tense aboard as the team hung on and did everything they could to secure the victory. Jaguar Logic pushed all the way sailing safely in the arduous conditions but extremely well.

At one point Jaguar looked like they had victory nailed but Puma Logic overhauled Encore on the final beat in 40 knots of wind to cross the line in a well deserved 5th place. Jaguar Logic sailed to yet another podium finish with an excellent 3rd place. It was not quite good enough though, Puma Logic won the series! The RORC ‘Yacht of the Year’ has finished the season on a high!

Full credit must go to the teams on Jaguar and Puma Logic for a superb effort. The mere fact that both yachts finished the race is a clear testimony of the standard they have reached in such a short period of time. Well done skippers and teams for a brilliant series.

All Change at the Top!

Following hurricane force winds on Saturday, racing got off to a great start for our three teams on Sunday. Panther, sailed by a team from the London Corinthian Sailing Club, had the best start and fought hard against Puma Logic up the first beat. Puma Logic rounded the 1st mark leading class 1 with both Panther and Premier Flair less than a boat length behind.

Jaguar Logic took up the rear at the 1st mark but sailed a solid downwind leg and a faultless race to edge into the lead just after the half way stage. Panther had the edge on Puma Logic for the following two legs but Puma eventually hauled them in and continued to increase their lead.

At the final mark Jaguar were looking good for a win with just over a mile left to sail and one mark rounding. They were being pushed hard by a determined team on Puma Logic, who were keen to improve on their 9th place from the previous week. Sadly for Jaguar Logic they made a small error at a vital stage of the race and Puma Logic seized the opportunity to overtake them.

With great boat speed, good tactics and excellent hiking Puma Logic hauled in two other boats to finish in third place. A very disappointed team aboard Jaguar Logic slipped to 6th place closely followed by Panther in 7th. What is very encouraging for the team on Panther is the improvement in their boat speed, which has resulted in them leading the other Reflex’s for much of the last two races. They are certainly making their intentions known!

Puma once again leads the Winter Series and are two points ahead of Great Scot IV. Jaguar are only four points behind Puma in third place. It is still extremely close with five boats still in the running for a series victory! Only two more races to go!

<img style="float:left; About this time two years ago I was taking a six-month break from sailing commercially, with the consideration of a career change at the forefront of my mind. I had become disillusioned and tired and I felt it was time to take action and address the situation.

Two years ago I would never have thought it conceivably possible that I would be stood on a stage in the magnificent Banqueting House on Whitehall two days ago to receive, on behalf of Puma Logic and her team, the prestigious RORC ‘Yacht of the Year’ trophy. Saturday night was the highlight of my sailing career and the proudest night of my life.

Success does not come without huge amounts of commitment from many people. One of the things I love most about yacht racing is that it is a team event, the team consisting of those on the water and the shore support. Also of huge importance to everyone on Puma Logic has been the support of friends and family, this has been especially the case for me.

It is the encouragement and support from my close family and Allie Smith, my co founder of Sailing Logic that got me through the difficult times of 2007. It is fair to say that in the autumn of 2007 I had hit rock bottom. The Fastnet had ended abruptly when Tom broke his leg. I was sailing with a team that had lost respect of me as their leader, and to be honest I did not really want to be sailing with them. I had lost my drive, my determination and most importantly my passion for sailing.

After a lot of soul searching in my six-months off and analysis of what had gone wrong I learnt a lot of harsh lessons. I firmly believe in the old adage ‘there are no weak teams, just weak leaders.’ I whole-heartedly buy into to that and came out the other end fighting. I identified some of my weak spots and addressed the issues head on. I was determined never to end up in a similar situation and I wanted to be better equipped to deal with any difficulties within the team, of which there will be always some.

I spoke at length during the dark winter months with most of the team that had sailed with me on the Fastnet 2007. I wanted to understand fully where it all went wrong and who better to ask than the people that I pissed off the most! Brian admitted that he had finally taken the decision (at 68 years old) to retire from offshore racing, so I started with him. Next up was Richard whose opinion on team building/management issues I value greatly. As for Tom, well he had no problems with me, but his wife banned him from racing!

Last year David Bright joined me on Puma Logic for the Warsash Spring Series as my first mate. It was my first time back on the water and I was certainly a little nervous. It was my first opportunity to put into place the new skill sets, which I hoped I had learnt, and without a doubt I had a certain amount of trepidation. Not to mention could I remember a kite from a genoa or a tack from a gybe!

During my six months off I decided to learn a new sport. I learnt to play tennis! I launched myself into it (in a similar way to the way people commit to Sailing Logic campaigns). Most of all I wanted to remember what it was like to learn a new skill set. I wanted to experience the frustrations of ‘not quite getting it.’

When after the 100th shot my coach stopped and exclaimed ‘that was perfect, what did you do differently?’ it all suddenly fell into place and I understood completely! I had absolutely no idea what I had done differently! To me I had just hit the ball in exactly the same way as the previous 99 shots! My coach could not understand why I could not repeat the accuracy, style and power of that shot. He asked me to visualise it; I tried and couldn’t. At that moment I knew exactly how it felt to be trying to learn a new skill.

After a few weeks of good coaching I was hitting nearly half the shots with the same efficiency. I could fully appreciate the difference between that good shot and the average ones. I could visualise what it was I was trying to achieve and my game did improve expotentially. I learnt a valuable lesson and felt I would have a much better empathy with the new team that was arriving at Shamrock Quay in early March.

Above all else what impressed me most was the patience of the coach, with just the occasional mild expression of frustration when I ‘did not get it.’ However, he never made me feel like an idiot. I wanted to be more like him.

I loved the Spring Series and sailing with Dave gave me a whole new outlook. I also re-learnt a lot about some of the most important aspects of yacht racing that I had completely forgotten. It is about fun and having a strong bond between everyone on board. I was back to how I used to be three years previous and I was loving my sailing again.

The Madeira Race, whilst being extremely tough and demanding, is now fondly remembered as ‘the best month in my life.’ Brian is now 70 and is coming back next year for the Round Ireland Race (having been to Madeira and back and completing the Fastnet this year). Richard also did the Madeira Race last year and the Fastnet this year. Tom finally managed to persuade Shelly to let him race offshore again and he successfully completed the 600 mile Middle Sea Race on the same boat as me!

The greatest success for me was when the entire core team of the Madeira Race last year, decided they wanted to come and race with me again this year in the Fastnet Race. What a turn around and I have to say that this team has a unique bond with many very special qualities. Dave Bright was hugely influential in the development of the team and the morale that was created, but I have no doubt that if I had not learnt to play tennis, then it could have been a different story!

The rewards were to be great. As I said in my speech, stood where King Charles I once stood, ‘never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined being stood here tonight to accept this amazing reward.’ Puma Logic and her team were proudly presented with the highest annual accolade that RORC have. Puma Logic was announced as the RORC ‘Yacht of the Year.’

Luckily for me, my team, on this occasion, did not want my head on the block; unlike poor King Charles I who was sadly executed at the same location in 1649 after loosing the Civil War.
With friends and family present, Sailing Logic had thirty two people at the prize giving to support Philippe and his team who were awarded the Somerset Memorial Cup for the RORC ‘Yacht of the Year’

Sailing Logic was extremely well supported as they received a standing ovation and loud cheer as the RORC ‘Yacht of the Year’ was announced at the climax of the prize giving. Andrew McIrvine, Commodore of the RORC, presented the team with the prestigious award before Philippe made his acceptance speech. Whilst thanking the RORC main committee for the award Philippe said ‘This is the highlight of my sailing career. Without a doubt this is the proudest night of my life’

Philippe also paid tribute to Allie Smith, his co founder of Sailing Logic concluding with ‘if it were not for Allie’s financial sacrifices, her passion and unsurpassed commitment to Sailing Logic then we would certainly not have enjoyed such great success. So on behalf of everyone who has sailed with us at Sailing Logic I would personally like to say thank you.’ An emotional Allie was then presented with a fabulous bouquet of flowers.

He closed the speech by saying ‘So where to from here? How do we top this one? I don’t know yet. I am still working on that one. But what I can tell you with certainty is that Puma Logic will be back next year, and the year after, doing what she does best….introducing people to our wonderful sport of offshore racing’

Then the party began and an emotional and ecstatic Sailing Logic team danced and celebrated into the early hours of the morning revelling in their fifteen minutes of fame.

Jaguar Logic Take the Lead!

Jaguar Logic sailed a great race yesterday in the Garmin Hamble Winter Series to take 2nd place. With Puma Logic experiencing various issues during the race and posting an uncharacteristic 9th place this was good enough to put Jaguar at the top of the leader board. With three races left in the series it is extremely tight at the top with Jaguar leading Puma by just one point. It is going to be an exciting climax to the series!

Panther Logic sailed an excellent race and were the leading Logic boat for much of the race which will have given the team a huge boost in confidence. They struggled for boat speed and made a small tactical error on the penultimate beat which sadly saw them drop three places, but still finished in a superb 6th place. They are now in 7th place in the series with a top six place now firmly in their sights!

Jaguar Logic Win Race Four

Jaguar Logic, skippered by Tim Thubron, sailed an excellent race on Sunday in strong and challenging winds in race four of the Garmin Hamble Winter Series. The conditions were perfect for an exciting day of racing with blue skies and 18 – 23 knots of breeze.

Jaguar Logic had an excellent start and sailed a tactically perfect 1st beat to lead around the 1st mark. This lead they kept to the finish line. They were pushed hard all the way with Premier Flair always close on their heels. A jubilant and very happy returned to Shamrock Quay for their post race celebrations.

Puma Logic also had another great result. After struggling on the first beat Puma Logic found themselves pinned in a position they really did not want to be in and lagged behind the first mark, in 7th place! By the second mark Puma was nearly five minutes behind Jaguar!

With excellent teamwork, well executed manoeuvres and great boat speed Puma Logic clawed back steadily throughout the race and picked one boat off at a time, eventually finishing one minute behind Jaguar Logic in 2nd place. So it was a 1st and 2nd place for Sailing Logic boats. What an achievement!

At the half way stage Puma Logic still lead the Winter Series with Jaguar Logic now in an amazing 2nd place in the series. Panther are not far behind in a good 8th place. It is going to an exciting and tense second half to the series! Was out of range which
combined with slight tiredness and a dislike of the virtual keybaord
on my i-phone have seriously supressed all creativity!
This race is somewhat reminiscent of the 2006 Round Britain and
Ireland Race in that every headland we have gone around the wind has
headed us! We have been slogging away upwind for the last 400 miles!
The good news is that we have now rounded the last island and are on
the homeward leg. We are power reaching at nearly 9 knots towards Malta
(at the moment). But guess what? The wind is due to head us shortly!
Last night was another amazing night. Not only did we improve our
position we had a stunning display from the mediterannean dolphins in
the pitch black moonless night. They were enigmaticly illuminated by
the phospherence as we were becalmed and creeping along at 2 knots.
Some of the time all we could see were the torpedo like streaks below
the surface as there trail was brilliantly lit. Sometimes they would
slow down and swim alongside us, belly up, showing off their supremecy
of the sea. What a wonderful and unexpected display.
Today we should get sunshine, lots of wind and over 20 degrees of
heat. Finally the shorts can come out and we can experience what this
race is meant to be about!
Anyone who wants to do a serious offshore race with a difference this
one is a must. The diversity, rapidly changing conditions and
stunning scenery make this one to remember. I now know why this is
one of the 'classics.'
For now though, please be rest assured we are fighting hard all the
way. I have just heard we are in 3rd place now and a race win is
firmly in our sights!
Sent from my iPhone

Dodging squalls, volcanoes and swarms of giant jellyfish!

Last night was magnificant if not a touch nerve wracking! On one side
of Seawolf we witnessed a sensational electric storm which illuminated
the sky and silhouetted the volcanoes. On the other side of us was an
erupting volcano and we were treated to a wonderful display of lava
been strewn from the summit which towered high in the sky.
What an amazing light show of deep oranges, reds and white which
dramatically lit the skies around us. The phospherence lit the stern
wave of Seawolf as we power reached accross the Mediterannean at 8
knots. It was an eerie couple of hours but a spectacle I would not
wanted to have missed. It was like something out of a sci-fi movie
set, only better and more real than even the most sophisticated home
cinema could portray.
The biggest challenge for us has been how to cope with the relentless
squalls that have been battering us for the last two days. Too much
sail area and there could be severe damage, too little and we are way
underpowered between the squalls. The other choice is continual sail
changes which are just about completed before the conditions change
again and will exhaust an already tired crew! What to do? Hopefully
we have now passed through the last one for the next 24 hours! But
don't hold me to that!
For now we are enjoying the breathtaking scenery of the North West tip
of Sicilia. It is a largely uninhabited part of the island which has
blown my mind with its rugged and awe inspiring beauty.
My mind is now back on the swarms of giant jellyfish that have
regularly engulfed us. They are not called dustbin lid jellyfish for
nothing! Those of you who know of my fear of these pointless and
disgusting creatures will understand and probably be at home laughing!
Ps my feet are still wet and are now going wrinkly!
Sent from my iPhone

HAMBLE WINTER SERIES RACE 3

Oh where did the winds gods go this weekend?
A very early and frosty start on Sunday for the Hamble Winter series saw all 3 of the Sailing Logic yachts determined to succeed and better their positions in IRC 1.

In anticipation of a light wind race, the yachts were made as light as possible and left the dock eager to get into the thick of it. A forecast of 8 knots of wind was a reality at Bramble Bank and the racing was started in good vibility but very little breeze. Jaguar and Puma Logic made a good start and were vying for the lead position going round the first windward mark. Jaguar Logic was first round with Puma and Premier Flair just behind. Puma then pulled ahead after hoisting their kite only for the wind to die away completely leaving the whole fleet wallowing in the morning sunshine.

A general recall of IRC 3 class, when no yacht was able to make it back to the start line made the decision for the race committee to abandon racing for the day as easier call. With no wind forecast until mid-afternoon, the yachts turned back in the direction of Southampton Water and home. A disapointing end to a race which held good promise. Let's all do a wind dance for next Sunday!!

Stomboli Volcano

Sailing Boots

I wish someone had mentioned to me that sailing boots can be a
beneficial assessory for people working on the foredeck. I had
assumed they were just an over rated fashion item that could
optionally be used in conjunction with a pair of shorts to look good
both on the rail and in the bar!
As a navigator and helmsman I usually pack a gps, hand bearing
compass, tide book and on a long offshore a pair of slippers to keep
my feet warm at the chart table!
Therefore, it has come as a great surprise that boots do have a
slightly more functional purpose! Spending the past 36 hours on the
foredeck in the Middle Sea Race has opened my eyes to a hole new world.
This race so far has had everything one of the big classics should
offer. We are constantly changinging sails, changing gears, breaking
kites, surfing at 14 knots or running out of wind under spectacular
volcanoes!
We have just passed Stromboli which is a massive volcano towering out
of the sea. I was somewhat surprised to see it is inhabited,
especially when witnessing the steam pouring out of the top as a stark
reminder of it's ominous and threatening prescence.
This certainly is not the weather I had been promised when asked to
join Seawolf nor is it what I had expected! Hopefully we may get some
sunshine eventually but that will have to wait till our 140 mile beat
to the western tip of Sicilia is complete.
As you may have guessed, I now have very wet feet and it looks like
they may not dry out till we get back to Malta on Wednesday! Oh yes,
if I had remembered my foulies that would have been useful too!
On the positive we are currently in 4th position in class and just
minutes behind the top three.
Till tomorrow
Philippe
Sent from my iPhone

Passing Mont Etna

We are off!

What a fantastic start! Led the fleet accross the line on a port flyer
under the stunning architecture of the natural harbour. What an
amazing place to start a 600 mile yacht race from. There was an
incredible atmosphere and morale on the boat is certainly up there.
Ttwo hours into the race and we are with the lead pack sailing with
our light a-sail in 12 knots of breeze. The skies are blue, the air
is warm and life is good.
Now we just await the 30 knot gale tonight!
Sent from my iPhone

Race Start Morning

There is just one hour to go before we slip Grand Harbour Marina for
the start of the Middle Sea Race.
